Barthes Baby: A Play In One Act

23rd June 2009

Interior. Night.

Ani: Barthes, baby. I’m pregnant.

Barthes: I’m dead, yo.

Ani: What do you mean you’re dead?

Barthes(silent)

Ani: Ay, me! I am bringing another fatherless bastard into this wretched world.

Ani: Your words have fucked me.

Curtain.

[Translation: The one about the bus stop is in > kill author, issue one, the Barthes issue. Fuck but its pretty. Alongside: heart-stabber J.A. Tyler, fierce Barry Graham and my favourite irreverent fuckers, Robb Todd and xTx — AND a bunch of people whose writing I didn’t know and now so much want to like Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz, Sheldon Lee Compton … ]

If you mess with Barthes, that is exactely the response I would imagine in one of his plays, dont expect sweet comforting words, just deal with his fuck up mind in this fuck up word

  3. Barthes comments:

i might be dead and therefore not entirely in control of my faculties, but i don’t remember writing any plays, Mariana. you sure you aren’t confusing me with Shakespeare?

  4. Ani Smith comments:

    xTx: Loved yours more, sugar.

Mariana: I didn’t mess with him, the bastard messed with me.

Barthes: Shut up and go buy the baby’s milk dammit.
