Down In Me

That’s enough now

I’m being funny again,” I laugh.
With the seriousness of the world,
At my shoulders.
I can barely walk today:
My legs are immovable sandbags,
But I shrug and clear my throat.
“You yield to me,” I sing.
A touch too loudly.
A hair too painfully;
A galaxy of too much aching fun.
The world in all its seriousness,
Crumbles at my giggling back.
No time for hysterics now.
No time for you,
Because -
There’s beer to be drunk,
Songs to be sung,
Women to be made love to,
Clichés to embody,
Tautologies to spew,
Pretensions to pretend to.
Et cetera to proffer,
People to fuck,
Lies to lie,
Fools to be made to look foolish,
Lives to live.
Families to watch die.

Gosh. Between drinking, singing, making love to women, embodying clichés and tautologising (hmm, not sure about that), you’ve had a busy weekend. So thank you for finding time for this poem.

I’m curious why the distinction between ‘Women to be made love to’ and ‘People to fuck’ - do you mean ‘fuck with’? Also I would’ve jumped on the pun: ‘Lies to lie with’ but that’s just me. Since all the other entries are plurals ‘Et cetera’ sticks out like a sore thumb - why not pluralise that too?

And why the capital letters at the start of every line - that is SO old-fashioned and here I thought you were young and trendy? I mean, you use the f-word and everything.

AUW: It’s a tough job, but.. well, you know.

Jim: Young and trendy? Me? What on earth gave you that idea? I learned to drink like a fish and swear like a sailor from my dear old gran. As for the rest… why the fuck not? ;)

If I’m not wrong, etcetera in Latin means “and others” (et = and, cetera = otherS). “Cetera” is already plural. Singular would/should (?) be “caeterum” or “ceterum”. Just to sound an old fussy junkie who had to study Latin 5 years in a row and hated it. In a previous century, of course :)

  5. Ani comments:

Lore: Oooh, yes, I should have used ‘caeterum’ with that ‘ae’ symbol to make it look all cool and stuff. :)

    And stuff ;P
